The Lady Dinos were in Richfield for the 2A/3A Preview at the Sevier Valley Center over the weekend. Playing two games in as many days the Lady Dinos were unable to earn a victory against the South Sevier Rams and the Kanab Cowboys returning home with a 2-9 overall record and sitting in the No. 17 spot in the latest RPI rankings.
Carbon has had a tough start to the season as they have only earned two wins against Union and Orem. They have also suffered a pair of Region 12 losses against Richfield and Manti.
The opening contest of the Preview was against the South Sevier Rams, last season the two teams squared off with the Rams earning a one-point 45-44 win. South Sevier jumped out in the first quarter and took control doubling up the Lady Dinos 14-7. The second was not good for Carbon either as they could only muster 3 points while South Sevier was able to add 16 more to their total and would take a commanding lead into the locker room up 30-10.
Up by 20 points in the third, the Rams didn’t let up scoring another 20 and defensively they allowed the Lady Dinos just 12, as they increased their lead to 28 heading to the final quarter. The Rams slowed things down in the fourth as the game was well in hand and Carbon added 14 to their total but it wasn’t enough as South Sevier took the 68-36 win.
South Sevier’s Kinley Jensen led all scorers with 20 in the contest.
Jacie Jensen led Carbon with nine points, Natalie Cartwright had seven, and Sage Vea scored five in the loss.
On Saturday, the Lady Dinos would face the defending 2A Champions the Kanab Cowboys. Carbon played a competitive first half but the second half was their undoing as the Cowboys earned the 56-34 win.
Looking to shake off the loss from the night before, Carbon came out firing putting up 14 in the first, however, the Cowboys would hold a slight advantage of 16-14. The Lady Dinos took the initiative in the second out scoring Kanab by two and tying the game up heading into the locker rooms at halftime.
In the third quarter, the wheels would fall off for Carbon as they scored just four points and Kanab put up 15 carrying a sizeable 40-29 lead into the final eight minutes. The Lady Dinos struggled again in the fourth managing five points as Kanab added 15 more to earn the 56-34 win.
Savannah Bateman scored 22 for the Cowboys to lead all scorers.
Madi Ferguson had eight for Carbon, Bailey Curtis had eight as well. Jensen scored seven in the loss.
The Lady Dinos will be back on the court on Friday afternoon when they welcome Cedar to Price.
