
Quietly the Green River Pirate boys’ basketball team has amassed an unbeaten record in region play and holds the No. 7 spot in the 1A RPI. On Friday evening the Monticello Buckaroo came to town, the Pirates were in control throughout the contest taking the 71-57 win in front of the home crowd.
The win moved Green River to 11-5 overall and in first place in Region 19, the Pirates’ last loss was on December 14 to Valley, and since have put together nine wins in a row.
Green River was ready to go against the Buckaroo, but Monticello wasn’t going to roll over and give up for the Pirates, as they kept things competitive in the opening quarter of play and stayed within close distance to Green River by the end of the first, the Pirates held a slight advantage 13-9. The second was a bit more fast-paced as each team found their offense and headed into the locker rooms at halftime the Pirates held a 30-25 lead.
Green River blew the doors off in the third quarter outscoring Monticello by 10 and carrying a comfortable 49-34 lead going to the fourth. In the final eight minutes, things got very interesting as the Buckaroo gave the Pirates their last best shot, with an offensive explosion scoring 23 in the quarter. The Pirates only needed to match their intensity scoring 22 and taking the 71-57 win.
Rolando Angiano scored 21 for Green River, adding nine rebounds, and six assists. Cristian Venzor had 18 with seven boards and four blocks, and Cristian Mendoza had 16 with six rebounds and two steals in the win.
On Tuesday the Pirates will welcome the Pinnacle Panthers to Green River.
