
The Green River Pirates were on the road to face the Monument Valley Cougars on Saturday to close out region play. It was a dominant effort from start to finish as they would take the road win by a score of 101-20.
The Pirates are now riding a 15-game winning streak. You would have to go back to December 14 for the last time they lost a contest a lopsided affair to Valley, 70-38. Green River now sits at 17-5 and is a perfect 8-0, holding the No. 6 spot in the latest RPI.
If the outcome of this game was ever in question, The Pirates answered the call in the first quarter putting up 23 points and holding the Cougars to zero, this was just the beginning for the Pirates. Moving into the second quarter, Green River kept their foot on the gas putting up another 26 as Monument Valley added seven points in the quarter and Green River took the sizeable 49-7 lead to the locker room at halftime.
In the second half, the Pirates were ready to close the door on the Cougars, coming out and going on another run, scoring 31 in the third while holding Monument Valley to 7. Things would somewhat slow down in the final eight minutes with Green River putting up 21 and closing out the Cougars with an 81-point win, 101-20.
Jason Hernandez led the way for the Pirates scoring 35, which was enough to get him back in the top 10 in the state for scoring with a 20.4 points-per-game average, he also added six rebounds and 11 assists. Antonio Macias scored 18 with nine boards and nine assists, and Cristian Mendoza added 15 with three rebounds and two assists in the win.
The final game on the schedule for Green River comes on Saturday when they welcome Caprock Academy from Grand Junction.
