In preparation for Lent, Ascension St. Matthews will host a Fat Tuesday celebration on March 4 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Pastor Angela Chacón joined Castle Country Radio to discuss what this celebration will entail and how residents of Castle Country can get involved in the festivities.

A significant part of Fat Tuesday is the traditional dinner that leads into Lent. Ascension St. Matthews looks to present a meal for all to enjoy,” as always, we have our outstanding, I would say award-winning, pancakes with our secret ingredient, and we will have eggs and ham and, as always, a drink.” In addition to these traditional offerings, the church will have gluten-free pancakes ready to serve,” We recognize that not everybody can eat flour products, so we want to make sure that we are inclusive, and this way, those who cannot eat regular pancakes can come and enjoy some gluten-free ones.”

Breaking from the more traditional aspects of the event, Chacón aims to make Fat Tuesday a celebration to be enjoyed regardless of religious affiliation,” if one goes down to New Orleans, which, of course, we’re not in New Orleans. Still, I hope that some people will get crazy and enjoy this opportunity to be flamboyant because that is what Mardi Gras is about. It’s this flamboyance. We are looking to award a prize to the best Mardi Gras costume that evening. And then we’ll be playing ‘Who’s Behind the Mask?’ We are taking pictures of different people around the community wearing a Mardi Gras mask, and we give you the opportunity to guess who this person is. And then there’ll be a drawing for all those who get it right to win a prize.”

As for pricing, the Pastor explained,” Individual tickets are $7, and the pancakes are all you can eat. And then a family of four is $25. So if you have a family of four, you will come out way ahead if you buy one ticket for a family of four rather than four individual tickets … Then, children under three eat free when accompanied by an adult. So I hope that there’s an opportunity for all people to come and enjoy this lovely meal.”

Tickets can be preordered by calling the church at 435-637-0106.

In closing, Chacón shared,” This is the time to have fun, my friends. Come out and get fat with us before Lent begins.”
