Green River was back on the court Thursday evening at the 1A State Championships taking on the Escalante Moquis in the consolation round. The Pirates, who had beaten the Moquis earlier this season, knew what to expect and handled things earning a 64-38 win.
On Wednesday, the Pirates lost a heartbreaker to Bryce Valley 49-47, putting Green River into the consolation bracket to face Escalante. In January, on the road, the Pirates claimed an 87-50 win over the Moquis and were looking to repeat the feat Thursday possibly.
Green River looked to get started fast and that is exactly what they did, hanging 21 on Escalante in the first quarter of play and then defensively holding them to just six points to take a 15-point lead. The Pirates kept up the scoring barrage in the second adding another 19 to their total allowing eight to the Moquis, taking a sizeable 40-14 lead at halftime.
The Pirates let off the gas a bit in the second half and Escalante outscored them in the third 16-15 but were still able to maintain their lead as they headed to the final period where each team slowed the pace as the Moquis scored eight points and the Pirates did just enough to hold their lead and win the contest 64-38.
Rolando Anguiano led the Pirates once again with 19, grabbing six rebounds and a pair of assists. Antonio Macias scored 14 adding four assists and three boards, Jason Henandez added 13 with five steals and five assists, and Cristian Venzor attacked the boards with 13 rebounds plus his nine points in the win.
Green River will face the Wendover Wildcats on Friday at 1:00. Wendover enters the contest at 9-17 holding the No. 15 spot in the RPI.
A loss will end the season for the Pirates but a win would earn them a spot in the sixth/eighth place game on Saturday against either Altamont or Manila at 2:30 p.m..
