Carbon and Emery baseball met on the diamond on Tuesday for the first of two meetings this week. For Carbon, it was Senior Day, and as the Dinos thanked seven seniors for their contributions, Carbon came away with a 4-3 win over the Spartans.
Trevor Williams, Stockton Kennedy, Mike Vigil, Kanon Childs, Ty Madsen, Rydge Butler, and Logan Madrigal all played their final regular-season game in front of the home crowd, and they did not disappoint.
Emery jumped on the board in the first when Tyce Larsen hit into a double play, but after tagging up, Beau Stilson scored. Hayden Christiansen came up to bat next, sending a double to center, driving in Hayden Abrams to put the Spartans up 2-0.
The Dinos would wait until the bottom of the second with two outs on the board, and with a swing of the bat, Childs sent a double to center, bringing home Jordan Nichols and Cash Withers, tying the score at 2-2. In the third, Butler scored off of an error by the catcher to give Carbon the lead at 3-2, and then in the fourth, Madsen would fly out to center, but Withers came home after tagging up, giving the Dinos the 4-2 lead.
The next couple of innings were quiet for both teams until the top of the seventh, when the Spartans put together a rally.
Emery started the inning with two singles, and with runners on first and third, Bronx Olsen came up to the plate and flied out to right field, which gave Christiansen time to score after tagging up. However, that is where the Emery rally would end. Paxton Falk, who had entered the game as a pitcher, retired the next two Spartans to give Carbon the 4-3 win.
Christiansen led the way for Emery, going 3-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Abrams was 1-3 with one run, and Garrett Conover was 1-3 in the loss.
Jace Frandsen got the start on the mound for the Spartans, going four innings and giving up four runs, two earned, on two hits and striking out three. Christiansen entered the game, putting in two innings’ worth of work, with two hits and striking out one.
Madrigal was 2-2 in the game for Carbon. Childs went 1-2 with a pair of RBIs, and Maddex Willson was 1-3 in the win.
Mike Vigil started on the mound for the Dinos, going six innings with two earned runs on six hits and striking out seven. Falk came into close out the game, surrendering one earned run on two hits and two strikeouts.
Emery is 7-14 overall and 3-7 in Region 12 play. They will return to the diamond on Thursday when they travel to face the Rabbits in Delta.
The Dinos are 9-13 overall and 7-6 in region play. To close the regular season, they travel to Castle Dale on Friday to take on the Spartans.
