The Emery boys’ soccer squad ended the regular season on April 30. The Spartans took on the No. 1-ranked Ogden Tigers in the second round of the State Championships, falling 8-0. Overall, the Spartans went 2-17, going winless in Region 12 play. The Spartans were a young team with only three seniors on this year’s squad, and Emery will look to next season to build off of this year.

Listed below is a recap of the 2025 season.

March 5, @ Carbon

A rivalry showdown opened the soccer season for the Carbon Dinos and Emery Spartans, as the two squads took the pitch on Wednesday, March 6. It was all gas and no brakes for the Dinos, putting up five of their seven goals in the first half as they cruised to a 7-0 shutout victory.

The game’s story was a five-goal first half, as Carbon overpowered the Spartans early with unrelenting pressure. The Dinos added two more in the second half to dominate the matchup 7-0.

Luke Brady led Carbon’s attack, scoring a hat trick. Tyler Morris added two goals, and Case Griffith and Logan McEvoy each added one. Morris was also credited with two assists. Tayger Timothy and Donavyn Prescott showed off some passing prowess, each getting an assist of their own.

Cannon Mortensen came away with the shutout in the goal, anchoring a stifling defense and ending the afternoon with two saves.

The Dinos move to 1-0 on the young season while Emery falls to 0-1. Carbon now sets their sights on a trip to Cedar City on Friday, March 7, to face the Canyon View Falcons, who are coming off a 0-0 (5-4 PKs) win over the Delta Rabbits.

Emery will also travel south to face the Pine View Panthers on Saturday, March 8.

March 6-8, @ St. George Tournament

The Emery Spartan soccer squad traveled to St. George over the weekend to play two games in as many days. Emery looks forward to the trip every year as a great way to build as a team. The Spartans earned their first win of the season against the Millard Eagles but fell to the 4A Pineview Panthers.

With such a short season (six weeks) and a significant region (eight teams), there isn’t much room for non-region games and the camaraderie built in these two-day tournaments. Recently, Coach Troy Winter joined KOAL’s Drive Time Sports to discuss what the weekend meant.

“It’s kind of a two-fold thing for Emery Soccer. It’s an opportunity for boys to hang out together, we get to socialize together, we get to eat meals together, and we kind of get to know each other a little bit, get comfortable with everybody, and get everybody to buy in on what’s going on with Emery Soccer. We play some really good teams down there, there’s a lot of 4A, 5A, and 6A teams that go down there.”

In the first game on Friday, the Spartans faced Millard, a team from the 2A South. Emery found the back of the net in this one, taking a 3-1 win.

This game was about getting that first mark in the win column, and that is precisely what Emery accomplished behind Seth Winter, who collected two goals, and Peyton Sermon, who added the other, giving the Spartans their first win, 3-1.

Moving to day number two, Emery faced Pineview.

Emery had zero answers for the Falcons as they came out and scored four goals in the first half to take a 4-0 lead at halftime. The second half was a carbon copy of the first, with Pinview adding four more to take an 8-0 win, putting the Spartans at 1-3 this season.

March 12, vs. Delta

On Wednesday, the Emery soccer team welcomed the Delta Rabbits to Castle Dale for their home opener. Emery was ready to play for the home crowd after opening the season on the road and spending the weekend in St. George. Delta was also prepared, scoring one goal in the first half and adding three more in the second to take a 4-1 win.

After losing one to the Dinos in Price, the Spartans went on the road for a tournament in St. George, where they collected their first win over Millard 3-1. The next day, they faced Pineview and were handed an 8-0 loss. Emery was looking forward to earning a win at home.

Delta scored a single goal in the first half and held the Spartans scoreless, going into halftime down 1-0.

All the action happened at the end of the first half. Korbin Spears kicked the ball from nearly midfield and snuck it just past the goalie for Delta to tie things up at 1-1. The Rabbits added three goals in the second half to take a 4-1 win, sending the Spartans to 1-3 this season.

Spears scored the only goal for Emery in the contest.

March 14, @ Manti

The Emery Spartans remain in search of their first region win of the season following an 8-0 loss to the Manti Templars on the road Friday afternoon.

Taylor Dettinger and Tommy Bridges registered hat tricks to lead the Templars to the win. Manti held a 3-0 advantage at the end of the first half and put the game away with five goals in the second to move to 2-0 in Region 12 play.

Friday’s loss drops Emery to 1-5 on the season and 0-3 in division play.

March 17, vs. North Sanpete

The Emery Spartans soccer squad welcomed the North Sanpete Hawks to Castle Dale for a rare Monday contest. Still sitting with one victory in the win column, Emery struggled to find offense and fell 2-1.

The loss drops the Spartans to 1-5 this season and 0-4 in Region 12. With the spring sports season so compact, Emery only has one more non-region game on the schedule with Grand, set for April 1. The initial RPI for soccer will be released on April 4.

North Sanpete entered the game 0-3, which meant they were still searching for their first win of the season.  The Hawks found the back of the net twice in the game, and Emery’s Seth Winter put one through the pipes, scoring the Spartans’ only goal in the 2-1 loss.

March 19, @ Canyon View

The Emery soccer team welcomed the Canyon View Falcons to Castle Dale on Wednesday. The game was initially scheduled for Tuesday in Cedar City, but due to the weather, it was rescheduled for Wednesday in Castle Dale. The Falcons grabbed an early lead and never looked back, handing the Spartans a 6-0 loss.

The loss drops the Spartans to 1-6 on the season, with the one win coming at Millard’s hands. Emery has struggled offensively through seven games, scoring five goals this season, three of which came in the win.

In the contest with the Falcons, Canyon View scored twice in the opening half, taking a 2-0 lead into halftime. They added four more goals in the second half, putting the contest out of reach for the Spartans and handing them a 6-0 loss.

Brett Langston scored twice for Canyon View and added one assist.

March 21, @ Juab

Looking for their second win this season, the Spartan soccer team welcomed Juab to Castle Dale on Friday. Juab entered the match with a 3-4 overall mark and was trying to get to .500 this season. At the end of the game, the Wasps had their wish granted, handing Emery a 3-0 loss.

The Spartans are 1-7 overall and still searching for their first region win. Emery’s lone win came from the St. George tournament when it defeated Millard.

Juab jumped out quickly, taking a 3-0 lead in the first half, and never looked back, taking that lead into halftime. In the second half, they kept the Spartans at arm’s length and off the scoreboard to collect their fourth win this season.

March 26, @ Richfield

Emery soccer is still searching for its second win of the season. Although it has won one this season, it has been looking to return to the win column ever since. On Wednesday, they traveled to Richfield to face the Wildcats. The Spartans held them to one goal in the first half, but the Wildcats scored three in the second to take the 4-0 win.

Emery collected their only win this season against Millard in St. George during tournament play, 3-1. Since then, they have been searching for another win but have come short.

Against Richfield, the Spartans held them to a single goal in the first half and went into halftime down 1-0. It was the second half when the Wildcats went to work finding the back of the net three times in this half to hand Emery the 4-0 loss.

Emery slides to 1-8 overall and 0-7 in Region 12 play. They have now reached the halfway point of league play, having played each team once.

March 28, vs. Carbon

On Friday, the Spartan soccer team welcomed the Carbon Dinos to Castle Dale for the second and final region meeting between the two teams in the regular season. Emery is still searching for their first league win, and unfortunately, Carbon took the contest, 7-0.

Emery has collected one win this season over Millard at a tournament in St. George. Having played all teams once, they begin battling through the second half of region play. Emery sits at 1-9 overall and 0-8 in conference play.

Carbon jumped out early in the contest, scoring five goals in the first half and taking a 5-0 lead at halftime. The Spartans regrouped for the second half but could not crack the Dinos’ defense, as Carbon added two more in the second half to take the 7-0 win.

April 1, vs. Grand

Emery Spartan Soccer welcomed the Grand County Red Devils to Castle Dale on Tuesday for non-region action. Grand entered the contest with a 7-2 overall record and first place in the 2A Southern Region at 4-1.  Emery found the back of the net once, but Grand would win the contest 2-1.

Emery is 1-10 this season and still searching for its first region win. On Friday, the Utah High School Activities Association will release its initial RPI, telling the Spartans how they stack up with the rest of 3A.

Grand was able to put one between the pipes once in the first half and would keep Emery off the scoreboard headed into halftime. In the second half, both teams found offense, and Grand would add another to their score, and the Spartans’ Ryker Sermon added a goal to cut the Red Devil lead in half, but the final score would stay that way, and Emery fell 2-1.

April 4, @ Delta

The Spartan soccer team traveled to Delta on Friday to face the Rabbits. Emery is still searching for its first Region 12 win. The Spartans could hold Delta off the board in the first half, but in the second half, the Rabbits found the back of the net three times to take the 3-0 win.

Emery is 1-11 overall and holds the No.17 spot in the latest RPI with five games left in the season.

Emery held the Rabbits scoreless in the first half, and both teams went into halftime tied at 0-0.  Delta broke through the Spartan defense in the second half and found the back of the net three times, taking the win.

According to the latest RPI, four of the five teams Emery will face the rest of the season are among the top seven in 3A.

April 9, vs. Manti

On Wednesday, the Spartans welcomed the Manti Templars to Castle Dale for the second and final meeting of the regular season. Emery couldn’t break Manti’s defense, and the Templars handed the Spartans a 6-0 loss.

Emery slides 1-12 this season and sits in the No. 17 spot on the latest RPI. Manti, on the other hand, is 10-3 overall and occupies the No. 2 spot.

The Spartans couldn’t penetrate the Templars’ defense and had difficulty keeping Manti off the board in the first half, but they took a 2-0 lead by halftime.

The second half was all Templars, as they found the back of the net four times. Emery was also shut out in the second half, as Manti collected the 6-0 win.

April 11, vs. Canyon View

Emery Spartan soccer was on the road in Cedar City on Friday to take on the No. 5 Canyon View Falcons. Still searching for their initial win in Region 12, the Spartans could not find the back of the net, dropping the contest 5-0.

Emery slides to 1-13 overall and 0-11 in league play. With three games in the regular season, it holds the No.17 spot in the latest RPI.

Emery has had its share of issues on the pitch this season, but the team continues to play hard for coach Troy Winter, who is in his 11th year leading the program. Canyon View came out firing early in the first half, putting three goals in the back of the net and taking the lead at halftime. They would break down the Spartans’ defense twice in the second half to earn the 5-0 win. The Falcons’ Brett Langston scored a pair of goals in the contest.

April 14, @ North Sanpete

The Spartans were on the road Monday to face the North Sanpete Hawks in Mount Pleasant. The Spartans are looking for their first region win of the season. Emery kept things close in the first half, but North Sanpete would blow the game open in the second half to take a 7-1 win.

Emery is 1-14 overall and 0-12 in Region 12 play. The Spartans have two games left on the schedule and are ranked 17th in the latest RPI.

The Spartans held the Hawks defensively in the first half to just one goal, but in the second half, the floodgates opened for North Sanpete as they found the back of the net six times. The Spartans saw an opportunity in the second half to get a goal between the pipes, but the Hawks won the contest 7-1.

April 16, vs. Juab

Spartan soccer made the trip to Nephi to face the Juab Wasps. The two teams were tied at halftime, but Juab collected three in the second half to take the 4-1 win over Emery.

Emery slides to 1-15 with the loss and sits at No. 17 on the latest RPI with just one game left on the schedule, the end of the regular season, and the playoffs are just around the corner.

Both teams played even in the first half and went to halftime tied at 1-1. Juab broke down the Spartans’ defense in the second half and found the back of the net three times to take a 4-1 win.

Seth Winter scored the lone goal for Emery in the loss.

April 17, vs. Richfield

Emery soccer ended its regular season on Thursday when the Richfield Wildcats came to Castle Dale. The Spartans got on the board in the first half, but Richfield tied it up and took the lead in the second half to earn the 2-1 win.

Emery ends the regular season 1-16 overall and completed their Region 12 schedule 0-14. The season ends on April 22. On Wednesday, April 23, the Utah High School Activities Association will release the final RPI and the bracket for the State Championships that will begin on April 25 at home sites.

Emery’s Kysler Kofford scored the Spartans’ lone goal in the first half. In the second half, however, the Wildcats scored two goals and defensively kept Emery off the scoreboard to earn the 2-1 lead.

With this being the Spartans’ last home game of the season, Emery celebrated its seniors, Chase Hanson, Jacob Stewart, and Mason Potter.

April 25, @ Providence Hall- Opening Round of State Championships

The Emery soccer squad traveled to Herriman to play the Providence Hall Patriots in the opening round of the State Championships. The Spartans took the Patriots to overtime and won 4-3.

The Spartans ended the regular season 1-16 overall and 0-14 in Region 12. They sit in the No. 17 spot in the final RPI and faced the Petriots in the opening round of the playoffs.

Throughout the entire contest, both teams matched each other goal for goal. The first half ended in a 1-1 tie. The teams battled back and forth in the second half, not wanting their season to end. After regulation, both squads were tied at 3-3, forcing overtime.

In the first overtime, both teams were still scoreless after the first 10-minute sudden victory period. In the second overtime period, Emery found the back of the net to take the 4-3 win and move on in the tournament.

Seth Winter, Payton Serman, and Kysler Kofford scored goals for the Spartans in the win.

April 30, @ Ogden- Second Round of State Championships

On Wednesday, the Spartans soccer squad traveled to Ogden to continue playing in the 3A State Championships.  Coming off an overtime win against Providence Hall last week, Emery advanced to face the defending champion Ogden Tigers on the road. The Tigers came out in the first half, putting the game out of reach, to take the 8-0 win.

Emery ended the season with a 2-17 overall mark and held the No. 17 spot in the final RPI released last week.

Ogden jumped out in the first half and scored seven goals. Ogden’s defense stifled Emery and kept them off the board the entire contest. The Tigers added one more in the second half to earn the 8-0 win and move on in the tournament, ending the Spartans’ season.

This was a very young Emery team. There were just a pair of seniors on the roster, and 19 players were either freshmen or sophomores, who will be looking to come back next year and use this season as motivation to come back and start all over again in March of 2026.

Congratulations to the Emery soccer team on the 2025 season.
