“There’s always something going on in Carbon County,” says Carbon Events and Recreation Director Kourtney Cox. Looking at the upcoming slate of events for CERCUT, it would be hard to disagree. Cox joined the KOAL newsroom to discuss activities ranging from city celebrations to youth camps coming to the Castle Country.
Opening our conversation, Cox discussed an upcoming Ultimate Frisbee Camp hosted by Karissa Marsing. “She is going to be out on our soccer field Aug. 5 through 7. As you said, it’s for kids ages seven to 12, starting at 9 a.m. and going until 10:30 a.m. There’s 45 minutes of instruction and 45 minutes of scrimmage, so if you guys are interested in signing your kids up, you’ll want to reach out to Carissa, and you can reach her at 435-671-7392.”
Moving to the topic of city celebrations, Cox spoke on CERCUT’s involvement in some of the Price City International Days festivities. Starting with the annual 5K, she explained,” Check-in begins at 7:30 p.m., and the race starts at 8 p.m., and the location is the parking lot of the LDS Church near Washington Park. It’s $20 per person. There is a group discount after three members There’s still plenty of time to preregister online. You can also sign up at the event itself.”
CERCUT will also be facilitating the International Days Cornhole Tournament. “We are limiting this to 32 teams. So, if you’re interested, please get in touch with us. We already have people signing up for it, and it fills up quickly. People love their cornhole, and people are gonna want to get signed up as quickly as possible for a chance to compete in this.”
The International Days Cornhole Tournament will be held on Friday, July 25, with check-in at 6:30 p.m.
Shifting gears again, Cox provided information on one of Carbon County’s hidden gems – the North Springs Shooting Range. “The facility there is just incredible. We’re doing a lot of work on it right now, just to polish the gem as you called it. It’s a great facility, and they host several events that people aren’t aware of. Classes include the Concealed Weapons Permit class. We have another one of those that’s coming up on Aug. 16. Garth Frandsen hosts it with Stormbringer defense, and those classes go from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. once a month.”
To register, call 435-636-7000 or email garthfrandsen@gmail.com.
To prepare and coordinate all these events, it takes a truly dedicated effort and team. Cox pulled back the curtain and shared what life looks like in the recreation department. “We start our week off with our Monday morning meeting. We go over the next four weeks of events, things like who do we need to reach out to and what details do we need to coordinate? What setup do we need to do today, or tear down, and how do we kind of plan the rollover of events going from one to the next? I’ve got a great crew out there. They are very passionate about everything that they do, whether it’s sports or events; they’re pros at this. So they can line these things up pretty seamlessly.”
Cox continued to sing the praises of her team,” I will tell you one of the crew out there has made the comment multiple times that she loves being a part of some people’s biggest memories. Whether it’s the county fair or the What a Woman Wants Expo, things like that, we just really like being involved in that and it’s very cool.”
Closing our conversation, Cox encouraged residents to get out and get involved: “There’s always something going on in Carbon County despite rumors that you hear otherwise. So get on carbonrec.com and check it out. Look at our Facebook page. We try to keep you up to date that way, and then get on the Carbon County events calendar for not only our events, but others as well.”
