As the Utah Division of Water Resources prepares to create its 2026 state water plan, the organization will be hosting a series of ‘Water Talks’ events to gather public input for the plan. These input sessions will make their way to the Castle Country on Wednesday, Oct. 22, for a hearing specific to the West Colorado Basin.
Under Utah Code 73-10-15, the Division of Water Resources is required to publish a state water plan periodically. Additionally, in 20204, HB240 directed both local and state government organizations to collaborate in the development of these plans.
These organizations include water conservancy districts and watershed councils on the local level, while bringing in groups such as the Division of Natural Resources, the Governor’s Office of Planning and Budget and the Colorado River Authority of Utah.
“These interactive meetings are designed to engage Utahns in conversations about current water challenges, local needs and future priorities,” reads a release from the DWR.
“Updating the State Water Plan is a key step in preparing for Utah’s water future,” said Candice Hasenyager, Director of the Utah Division of Water Resources. “These Water Talks will help ensure the plan reflects both local issues and statewide priorities.”
According to the DWR,” Each state water plan strives to identify current water use and future demand throughout the state as well as provide recommendations for policy, fiscal support and implementation of findings by governmental and private institutions. The plan is the culmination of data gathering, modeling and collaborative efforts with a diverse and balanced group of stakeholders at the state and local level.”
For Carbon and Emery counties, a ‘Water Talks’ session will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 22, beginning at 6 p.m. in the Emery County Administration building at 75 East Main Street in Castle Dale.
