The Carbon Dinos kicked off a multi-week road stand on Friday, Sept. 12, as they traveled down I-70 to face the Richfield Wildcats. Richfield started quickly and never looked back as they defeated the Dinos 39-7.

The first quarter marked a slow start for both teams, with special teams woes impacting the Dinos and offensive inefficiency plaguing Richfield. The Wildcats broke through midway through the frame, with junior back Trey Yardley rushing nine yards, which helped create a 7-0 lead at the end of one.

With the lid off, Richfield poured it on in the second, scoring three times in the period – twice by air and once by land. Quarterback Cordon White opened the outburst with a 15-yard pass to Aidan Olsen. On the ensuing possession, Colton White ran through the Dinos’ defense and sprinted 70 yards to the end zone. Closing the quarter, Cordon White delivered a short screen pass to Temana Vakautakakala, who weaved through the Carbon defense for a 12-yard score. Entering the midway mark, Richfield led the Dinos 26-0.

Colton White struck again to open the third, taking a pitch along the left side and battling three yards across the goal line. The potent rushing prowess of Richfield scored once more in the frame when sophomore back Derek Barton plowed three yards through the Dinos’ defense and into the promised land to create a 39-0 advantage.

Carbon was able to avoid the shutout thanks to some fourth-quarter heroics. Dropping back in the pocket, quarterback Kayden Dunn delivered a dime downfield to Trace Crespin, threading the needle between two defenders in the process. Crespin would land, rotate, and speed to the end zone for a 34-yard score. A converted extra point by Tayger Timothy set up a final score of Richfield 39, Carbon 7.

With the loss, Carbon falls to 2-3 overall and 0-2 in region play. Another road test awaits the Dinos on Friday, Sept. 19, as they make the trip to Nephi to face the Juab Wasps (4-1, 0-1 region).
