As the Carbon County Commission gathered for its regularly scheduled meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 17, one item stood out compared to the everyday work of the commission. This item was a resolution supporting ‘A Bolder Way Forward, ‘ an organization dedicated to helping girls and women in Utah thrive.

“‘A Boulder Way Forward’ in Carbon County is a grassroots effort dedicated to lifting up women and girls, which in turn benefits all residents of our community,” said Stacy Anne, a member of the organization. “We believe that when we work together, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. So, we actively collaborate with existing local programs and initiatives to create positive lasting change.”

Spearheading the organization within Carbon County are Anna, Brenda Addley and Christina Pay. Alongside them are members throughout the county united in advancing opportunities for women and girls.

The ‘Bolder Way Forward’ framework takes the shape of a wagon wheel consisting of 18 spokes. Each spoke represents an issue facing women in the categories of education, community engagement, safety and security, health and well-being, and workplace.

Pay addressed the commission,” We do this because we love the women and girls in Carbon County. And we want them to have the very best opportunities to be successful and healthy in life.”

Pay then proceeded to read a proclamation asking the commission to “recognize the importance of supporting a bolder way forward to strengthen opportunities for women and girls in Utah” and “Utilize the research and policy guidance provided by a Bolder Way Forward to inform decisions that elevate women in Utah.”

Utah has a storied history of advancing and protecting women’s rights. In 1870, Utah granted women the right to vote. This was later revoked in 1887 by congressional action. This right was reinstated in 1896 when Utah became a state and enshrined the right within the state constitution, granting women the right to vote and hold office.

“We have the Miss Carbon County pageant. We support that, and it’s just fun to see all the girls as they progress through that, and they support this community,” said Commissioner Tony Martines. “Working with Shelley Wright as well, you see the other side of that. So, anything that we can do to support girls, ladies in this community, I think is wonderful.”

Commissioner Jared Haddock added to this sentiment, sharing his personal experience with the group: “I felt a little odd at first being the only male, and then they realized that they need male allyship as well …. Having two daughters, myself and a wife and family, I see the importance of what you do and how we treat our women in our area.”

When the resolution was put to a vote, the commissioners unanimously approved supporting the organization, officially designating Carbon County as a ‘Bolder Way Forward’ county.
