The Lady Dinos spent last weekend in Roosevelt at the Battle in the Basin Tournament hosted by Union High School. Playing against teams from across the state, Carbon played four games in three days, going 1-3 over that span.

Carbon started on Thursday, facing the Uintah Utes. The Utes play in the 4A ranks and would jump out to a 15 -3 lead after the first quarter. Carbon fought back in the second quarter, matching the Utes point for point, but would still trail 24-12  at halftime. Going into the third, the Lady Dinos outscored Uintah 11-6, cutting into the lead, but the Utes amped it back up in the fourth, outscoring Carbon 18-11 to take a 48-34 win.

For the Dinos, Malia Smith led the way with 10, Bailey Johnson and Harley Hopes each scored 10 in the loss. Blythe Bradford pulled down 134 rebounds.

On Friday, the Dinos squared up against the Canyon View Falcons. Last season, these two teams were members of the same region, but Carbon was moved to Region 13 this season, so this may be the only time they face each other this year.

Carbon came out flat in the opening quarter and could only score three while the Falcons ran the court to take an 18-3 lead after one. Carbon would once again match their opponents’ intensity in the second as both teams scored nine, but the Dinos were unable to close the gap as they headed to the locker room down, 27-12.

In the third, the Dinos kept things close, holding Canyon View to 11 while scoring seven in the quarter. The Lady Dinos outscored the Falcons 10-7 in the final eight minutes, but Canyon View maintained its lead to take the 15-point win 45-30.

Smith once again led the way for the Lady Dinos with nine. Johnson added seven and five boards, and Bradford scored five, grabbing five rebounds in the loss.

On the final day, Carbon would face two opponents; up first was the Grand Red Devils. A big third quarter from the Dinos would put the game away 46-12.

The Dinos led for the beginning, posting eight points in the first and another 12 in the second, and using their defense to hold the Red Devils to four points as they went to the locker room up 20-4 at halftime.

Carbon would allow just two points in the third, while they went on a tear, adding 22 points in the quarter to run their lead to 42-6. In the fourth, Carbon allowed just four points, and Grand doubled their point total as the Lady Dinos took a 46-12 win.

Johnson scored 10 for Carbon as Tayla Orth added eight and Smith had five in the win.

The final game of the weekend would put the Dinos up against the Duchesne Eagles. The second and third quarters would seal the deal for Carbon as they were outscored 23-3 by the Eagles on their way to handing Carbon a 47-24 loss.

In the first quarter, Duchesne was just one step ahead of the Lady Dinos, as the Eagles held a slight edge going into the second quarter, ahead 14-10.  The Eagles turned up the defensive heat on the Dinos in the middle quarters, as Carbon scored only one point in the second quarter and two in the third, entering the fourth down 37-13. Carbon outscored the Eagels in the fourth, but it was too little too late, and Duchesne took the 47-24 win.

Smith and Bradford each scored six, with Bradford grabbing six rebounds.

The Lady Dinos head back to the court on Tuesday when they will welcome the Reichfield Wildcats to town.

Game time is set for 7:00 p.m..
