The Green River boys’ basketball squad welcomed the Grand Red Devils to town on Tuesday evening. Coming off a tough loss to San Juan, the Pirates were ready, and a big night from Jason Hernandez pulled out the win 71-64.

The Pirates sit at 3-1 this season, with wins over Tintic, North Sevier, and now Grand, and their only loss came at the hands of the San Juan Broncos.

The first quarter set the tone for Green River, as they outscored the Red Devils 24-11, putting some distance between the two teams. The two teams played evenly in the second quarter, but the Pirates maintained the lead, 41-28.

Grand came out in the third quarter, taking a slight edge in the quarter, but the Pirates still held a sizeable 59-48. The Red Devils outscored the Pirates in the fourth as well, but Green River maintained its lead and won 71-64.

Hernandez collected 28 points, dished out eight assists, and had three rebounds for the Pirates. Rolando Anguiano scored 18, pulling down five rebounds and handing out five assists while gathering a pair of steals, and Jesus Escalante added 10 with six rebounds and a pair of steals and assists in the victory.

On Friday, the Pirates travel to face Bryce Valley.
