The Lady Dinos spent the weekend in Southern Utah to take part in the Southern Classic. Opening up against Crimson Cliffs, Carbon was handed a 66-44 loss. The only win would come against Hunter on Friday, 65-50. In the final contest on Saturday, they faced the Canyon View Falcons, who won 49-40.

Carbon sits at 3-7 overall, with wins coming against San Juan, Grand, and Hunter.

The tournament started on Thursday as the Lady Dinos lined up to face the Crimson Cliffs Mustangs. The Mustangs outscored Carbon by 18 in the first quarter and never looked back to take a 66-44 win.

Crimson Cliffs came out fast in the first quarter, going on a 24-6 run to take the lead. Moving into quarter two, Carbon found its offense putting up 16 in the quarter, but Crimson Cliffs added another 17 to their total to take a 41-22 lead into the locker room at the half.

In the third, the Mustangs reloaded at halftime and came out to push their lead to 55-31, then closed out for a 66-44 win.

Malia Smith scored 17 to lead the Lady Dinos. Kayla Jones scored eight, and Bailey Johnson had five in the loss.

In the game on Friday, Carbon squared off with the Hunter Wolverines, and the Dinos won behind a big second quarter, 65-50.

The Lady Dinos came out in the first and battled back and forth with the Wolverines until Carbon held a 16-14 edge after the first quarter. In the second, Carbon made their move, going on a 19-7 run to take a 35-21 lead at halftime.

In the second half, the Lady Dinos slowed things down to the point that Hunter would outscore them in the period 17-11, but the Dinos still held a 46- 38 lead. The final eight minutes were exactly what Carbon needed as the Lady Dinos ramped it back up to close out the contest 65-50.

Three Lady Dinos scored 13 in the win over Hunter: Saren Nelson, Emma Bowman, and Jones.

In the final game of the weekend, Carbon faced a well-known opponent, the Canyon View Falcons. The two teams shared Region 12 for the last few years and are very familiar with each other.  Canyon View took charge in the opening quarter, and the Lady Dinos searched for an answer but couldn’t find one, as the Falcons won 49-40.

The Falcons put together a first quarter in which they defensively held Carbon to just four points and offensively collected 11, carrying a seven-point lead into the second. Carbon found something in the next quarter, scoring nine while holding the Falcons to eight, and headed to the locker room down 19-13.

The second half saw the Falcons find their offense once again, this time to the tune of 20 points, while Carbon added another 15 but still went to the final eight minutes down 39-28. In the fourth, Carbon turned the offense on, but they couldn’t slow Canyon View down as Canyon View claimed the 49-40 win.

Johnson scored 12 for the Lady Dinos. Natalie Cartwright had seven, and Jones scored six in the loss.

The Lady Dinos will be back on the floor Tuesday evening when they welcome the South Summit to Price.
