The Carbon Dino boys basketball team closed out a jam-packed Christmas break on Friday night as they welcomed the San Juan Broncos to Jurassic Park. Carbon set the tone in the opening quarter and held the Broncos off the rest of the contest to earn the 91-70 win.
Four days after Christmas, the Dions traveled to Cedar City for the Steve Hodson Classic, taking on teams from across the state and going 0-3. The day after New Year’s, they were on the floor in front of the home crowd to face San Juan.
Carbon opened up in the first quarter, looking to take control, and that is precisely what they did, taking a 24-8 lead after the first eight minutes. The first quarter must have woken up the Broncos, as they came back firing, putting up 30 in the second, but the Dinos still held a 46-38 lead as both teams headed into the locker room.
In the third, Carbon came out firing again and turned up the heat defensively on the Broncos as the Dinos pushed their lead to 76-48, and both teams kept firing into the fourth quarter, and even though Carbon had dialed back their intensity a bit, they were still able to collect the win 91-70.
Carter Warburton led the way for the Dinos with 17. Ty Mortensen and Logan Bennett each scored 14, and Cash Withers added 13 in the win.
The win moves Carbon to 5-9 overall and keeps it at No. 13 in the latest rankings.
The Dinos will now jump into region play when they travel to Roosevelt to face the Union Cougars on Wednesday.
