
The Lady Spartans basketball squad made the trip to Roosevelt on Tuesday evening to face the Union Cougars in a region contest. The game was tied after the first quarter, but in the second half, Emery pulled away, outscoring the Cougars by 14 in the fourth to collect their second region win this season, 48-30.
Emery sits at 9-6 overall and 2-0 in region play. They also hold the No. 2 spot in the latest rankings by MaxPreps and the Utah High School Activities Association, with seven games left on the schedule until the opening round of the State Championships.
In the first half, both teams flipped position by quarter. In the first, the Lady Spartans came out and put 10 points on the board, all while holding the Cougars to seven. In the second, it was Union putting 10 on the board and, in the process, holding Emery to seven, as both teams went to the locker room tied at 17-17 at halftime.
In the second half, Emery started to put some distance between the two teams. The Lady Spartans put up 14 in the third and defensively held Union to 10, carrying a 31-27 lead into the final eight minutes. Emery saw their chance and took it in the fourth, as they went on a 17-3 run in the final quarter, closing out the Cougars, taking the 48-30 win.
Carlie Hurst led the way for the Lady Spartans, scoring 13 points and grabbing one rebound. Addie Hurst added 10 with a pair of rebounds and a steal, and Megan Stilson had eight with a pair of steals, one assist, and one rebound.
The Lady Spartans will beback on the court on Thursday when they travel to Mount Pleasant to face the North Sanpete Hawks.
