On Tuesday night at the Spartan Center, the Lady Spartans welcomed the Dinos from Carbon High School. In the first of two region meetings, another one coming up towards the end of the season, in Price, the Spartans came out quickly, outscoring the Dinos in the first half, and cruised to a 46-25 win.
Carbon is sitting at 8-11 overall with a 2-2 record in region play, holding on to the No. 11 spot in the latest rankings from MaxPreps and the Utah High School Activities Association. The Spartans, on the other hand, are sitting at 10-7 and 3-1 in the region, holding on to the No. 3 spot in the latest polls. The two teams will square off one final time in Price in the regular season finale on February 5.
Emery jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead in the first quarter, with Carbon unable to find any kind of offensive rhythm, and finally, with two minutes left, Natalie Cartwright got the Dinos on the board with a shot in the paint underneath the bucket to make the score 10-2, but Emery held the lead 13 to 2 after the first quarter with Aleeyah Cowley scoring 11 of the Spartans 13. In the second quarter, the Dinos came out firing, trying to close the gap with the Spartans. Scoring nine in the quarter, the Spartans would do one better, scoring 10 and carrying a 23-11 lead into the locker rooms at halftime.
In the second half, the Lady Spartans came out continuing their run on defense, holding the Lady Dinos to six points in the quarter and adding 12 of their own to carry a comfortable 35-17 lead into the final eight minutes. In the fourth, the Lady Spartans slowed things down as they just needed to maintain their lead over Carbon, and they did just that, adding 11 and closing out the Lady Dinos 46-25.
For the Dinos, it was Elsie Morley scoring seven in the contest. Blythe Bradford added five, and Taya Orth and Bailey Johnson each added four in the loss.
Cowley had a huge game for the Lady Spartans, scoring 19 and grabbing five rebounds. Megan Stillson added eight points to go with her four rebounds, two steals and one assist. Callie Hurst and Addie Hurst each scored seven, with Callie grabbing three rebounds and three steals and Addie having four rebounds and a steal in the victory for the Spartans.
Both teams will be back on the court on Thursday and will be on the road.
Lady Spartans will travel to Kanab to take on the Cowboys on Thursday, with a game starting at 6:30, while the Lady Dinos will be in Roosevelt to take on the Union Cougars at 7:00.
