
On Friday and Saturday, the Carbon Dino wrestling squads descended upon Richfield for the Divisional Tournament. 22 of the 26 wrestlers the Dinos dressed for the tournament finished in eighth place or better, earning a spot in the State Championships that will take place in the first week of February.
Getting things started in the 106-pound class, Jantz Greenhalgh finished a perfect 3-0, earning a first-place finish and qualifying for state competition. In his final match, he defeated Tegan Griffiths of Canyon View by a major decision of 13-4. Also in the 106-pound weight class, Jaden Barlow finished 3-2 with a win in his fifth-place match, defeating Kyle Tebbs of Canyon View by a 9-3 decision.
At 113 pounds, Ashton Densely finished the tournament 3-2, earning a win in his fifth-place match by injury default over Trevor Cowan from Juab. Moving to the 120-pound class, it was JJ Munoz who took third in his division with a 3-1 record, earning the win over Easton Utley of Richfield by a 9-4 decision.
Riker O’Hearon continued his march to a repeat State Championship at 138 pounds, going 3-0 and earning a win in his final match over Drake Johnson of Juab by pin. LaShawn Duran earned a fifth-place finish at 150 pounds, finishing 4-2 over the two days, taking a win in his final match over Parker Applegate of Juab by pin.
Another first-place finish came at 157 pounds by Jack Burdick, who went a perfect 3-0 in his matches, taking the win over Limoni Matakaiongo of Canyon View by a 7-6 decision. Bryce Ferguson at 165 pounds, placed fifth overall, taking a 3- 2 record with a win in his final match by injury default over Ethan Wardell of Ogden.
Moving into the 215-pound class, two wrestlers placed in the top eight. Andrew Kifer went 4-1 overall, finishing in third place, winning his final match over Grady Jacobsen of Juab by pin. Also at 215 pounds, JJ Ruden finished 3-2, winning a fifth-place match by major decision over Carter Killian of Canyon View, 14-6.
Closing out the weight classes in the 285-pound class, two Carbon wrestlers finished in the top 8, qualifying for state. Jared Simmons went 2-1 overall, falling in the first-place match to Tate Killian of Canyon View by pin, and Daxtyn Mower finished 5th, going 3-2, winning his final match by injury default over Tevon Vakautakala of Richfield.
The season will conclude on February 4th and 5th when the 3A classification returns to Richfield for the State Championships at the Sevier Valley Center.
