On Thursday, the Lady Dinos made the trip over the mountain to Mount Pleasant to face the No. 2-ranked North Sanpete Hawks. This would be the second and final time they faced this team in the regular season, and Carbon couldn’t generate enough offense to overcome the Hawks’ onslaught, as the Lady Dinos fell 68-47.
Carbon sits at 8-13 overall and 2-4 in region play, holding on to the No. 11 spot in the latest rankings by MaxPreps and the Utah High School Activities Association. The Lady Dinos have just two games left on the schedule before the regular season ends next week.
The Lady Dinos kept the pace with the Hawks in the first quarter as the North Sanpete squad put up 17, and Carbon was close behind, scoring 15 of their own to go down by just two heading into the second. In the second quarter, Carbon outscored North Sanpete, going into the locker rooms at halftime down by just one, 31-30.
In the third quarter, Carbon went cold as the Hawks turned up their defense and turned on their offense, outscoring the Lady Dinos 21-6 to take a 52-36 lead going into the final eight minutes. In the fourth quarter, the Lady Dinos came out looking to close the gap between them and the North Sanpete Hawks, but it was all in vain; the Hawks kept Carbon at arm’s length, outscoring them by five in the quarter and taking a 68-47 win.
For the Lady Dinos, it was Tayla Orth who led the charge with 18 points, seven rebounds, two blocks, and two steals. Malia Smith and Bailey Johnson each scored eight, with Smith adding three rebounds and an assist, and Johnson collecting four rebounds and two steals in the loss.
