
On Wednesday evening, the Green River Pirates welcomed the Pinnacle Panthers to the gym. Green River is ranked No. 7 overall in the 1A classification and got right to business with the Pinnacle Panthers outscoring them in every quarter to take an 89-38 win.
Green River holds a 12-7 overall mark and a 5-0 record in region play. The Panthers are 8-8 with a 1-3 mark in region play and hold the No. 12 ranking in the MaxPreps and Utah High School Activities Association rankings.
The Pirates jumped out fast in the opening period and put some distance between themselves and the Panthers as they took a 30-14 lead in the first quarter. In the second, it was all Green River all the time, as the Pirates didn’t let up and headed to the locker room at halftime up 57-19.
In the third, Green River dialed back the intensity a bit but still maintained their sense of urgency, building on the lead and pushing it to a 74-27 advantage. The final eight minutes were just a formality as Pinnacle couldn’t recover from the deficit and the Pirates took the 89-38.
For the Pirates, Rolando Anguiano scored 34 to lead all scorers, adding 10 rebounds, five blocks, three steals, and a pair of assists. Jason Henandez and Jesus Escalante each scored 20, with Hernandez adding 12 assists along with a pair of rebounds and steals, and Escalante had 10 rebounds and an assist, and a block in the win.
Dominick Vigil and Diego Contreras each had seven, with Brody Howell and Isaiah Hayes each scoring six.
Pinnacle will be back on the floor on February 5 when they will travel to face Whithorse. On January 23, the Raiders traveled to Price and earned a 67-56 win.
Green River will be back on the court on February 3 when they will take on Monument Valley on the road. In their first meeting, the Pirates collected an 86-45 win at home.
