
On Friday, the Carbon swim team welcomed Region 13 to the Desert Wave Pool for the region tournament, the final meet before the State Championships. The Dino swimmers finished the day in third place in the competition, and it was the Union Cougars that claimed the top prize on both sides of the pool.
The Dinos have made their way through the regular season and, with the region tournament behind them, look forward to the State Championships at Brigham Young University.
In the girls’ division, the Union Cougars claimed the top prize, scoring 487 points. Emery finished in second with 472. Carbon finished third with 371 points, with North Sanpete (252) and Manti (125) making up the rest of the field.
Carbon earned a first-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay with 1:49.87. The team of Kanyon Christensen, Maya Bower, Lily Thayn, and Lisa King earned the honors. In the 400 relay, Carbon finished second behind Union, with the team of Christensen, Bower, Thayn, and Blackburn in 4:09.70.
Individually, the Lady Dinos claimed three top finishes, starting with Lily Thayn in the 200 IM and her time of 2:30.72. Lisa King finished first in the 50 freestyle with a time of 26.15. Maya Bower took first in the 500 freestyle, turning in her time of 5:57.40, and Kanyon Christensen took first place in the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:18.60.
Thayn would go on to claim second place in the 100 butterfly in 1:09.71 seconds, and King would take second place in the 100 freestyle in 58.38. Bower would go on to finish second in the 200 freestyle in 2:15.33.
The Union Cougars also claimed the top spot in the boys division with 499 points. Emery was in second with 489, and Carbon finished third with 384. Manti (148) and North Sanpete (112) comprised the rest of the field.
Carbon claimed two top-three finishes in relays in the 200 free. Bracken Hanson, Leland Kespel, Logan Kranendonk, and James Tullis finished in second with their time of 1:39.52. In the 200 medley relay, the same team swam to a third-place finish with a time of 1:49.84.
Individually, Hanson would come away with a first-place finish with his time of 5:18.00 in the 500 freestyle. He also claimed a third-place finish in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:00.02 seconds. Tullis went on to finish second in the 100 yd backstroke with a time of 59.50. He also claimed a third-place finish in the 50 freestyle at a time of 24.05. Kranendonk took third in the 500 freestyle at 5:36.33.
The Dinos will now wait to return to the pool on February 13th and 14th at Brigham Young University for the State Championships.
