The Spartan swim team and other teams throughout Region 13 descended on the Desert Wave Pool on Friday afternoon for the region tournament. Both the Emery boys’ and Lady Spartan swim teams earned second-place finishes behind the Union Cougars.

Emery finishes the regular season and the region tournament with a high level of confidence after their success so far, and is looking to carry that into the State Championships at Brigham Young.

In the girls’ division, the Union Cougars claimed the top spot with 487 points. Emery followed close behind with 472. Carbon (371), North Sanpete (252), and Manti 125 rounded out the rest of the field.

The Lady Spartans collected three top-three finishes in relays, starting with a 200 medley relay. The team of Illyria Mason, Brooklyn O’Neil, Hallie Frandsen, and Jesse Childs swam their way to a second-place finish in 2:03.63. They also finished second in the 200 free with a time of 1:49.88. In the 400 free, the team of Emma Grimm, Hadley Meccariello, Grace Allen, and Annie Johansen finished in third with a time of 4:21.26.

Frandsen earned the Lady Spartans a first-place finish in the 100 butterfly at 1:07.12. Childs finished in third. Mason took second place in the 50 free at 26.66 and finished second in the 100 backstroke at 1:09.07. Johansen finished third in the 500 free with a time of 6:21.76.

The Cougars also claimed the top spot in the boys division, scoring 499 points. Emery finished second with 489. Carbon (384), Manti (148), and North Sanpete (112) round out the finishers.

The Spartans claimed two first-place finishes in the 200 relays and one second-place finish in the 400. In the 200 medley, the team of Thomas Black, Trek Petersen, Reve Mason, and Jamison Christiansen swam to a first-place finish in 1:42.11 seconds. In the 200 free, Mason, Petersen, and Black were joined by Tyler Daley, and they swam to a first-place finish in a time of 1:33.97. Emery’s 400 free relay team, consisting of Christiansen, Daley, Cody Howard, and Kamron Hanson, finished in second in a time of 3:40.36.

Individually, Mason earned a first-place finish in the 200 IM in a time of 2:12.79 and in the 100 butterfly with a time of 57.93. Black claimed a first-place finish in the backstroke at 56.32 and a second-place finish in the 50 freestyle at 23.33. Petersen finished in first place in the breaststroke at 1:02.24 and in second place in the 100 freestyle at 51.83. Christiansen claimed third in the backstroke at 1:01.72.

The Spartans are now off until February 13th and 14th, when they will travel to Provo and the Brigham Young University campus for the State Championships.
