
The Green River Boys Basketball Squad traveled to Monument Valley to take on the Cougars on Tuesday night, and it was quick work for the Pirates, who came away with a 76-24 win to remain unbeaten in region play.
The Pirates are 13-7 overall and 6-0 in region play. They also hold the No. 8 spot in the current rankings put out by MaxPreps and the Utah High School Activities Association, with three games left to go.
Tuesday night was a dominating performance for Green River from start to finish as they came out firing in the first quarter, scoring 28 points while their defense held Monument Valley to one. In the second quarter, it was more of the same as Green River continued to pour it on, adding 22 more points and holding the Cougars to six as they took a commanding 50-7 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The Pirates let their foot off the gas in the second half, coming out taking an 11-6 advantage in the third but still holding a 61-13 lead as they headed into the final eight minutes. It was a foregone conclusion what would happen as the teams headed into the final period: Green River put up 15 more while Monument Valley added 11, but the damage had been done, and the Pirates claimed the 76-24 victory.
Jason Hernandez led the way once again for Green River, scoring 27, dishing out nine assists, grabbing four rebounds, and three steals. Rolando Aguiano had 18 with 11 rebounds, five blocks, four assists, and three steals, and David Mendez had nine with five rebounds, three steals, and two assists in the win.
The Pirates have just three games left on the regular season schedule, and they will get back at it on Friday when they head to Monticello to take on the No. 11 Buckaroo.
