
On Friday and Saturday, on the campus of Brigham Young University, the 3A swim season came to a close at the State Championships. The 2-day event had preliminaries on the first day and finals on the second. When the water stilled, the Carbon Lady Dinos finished third overall in 3A, and the boys had their greatest finish ever, taking fourth. Four School records were broken, and a pair of State Championships made this one of the best meets ever.
In the ladies division, Canyon View turned in a dominating performance, taking first place with 509 points, while Union finished second with 248.5. The Lady Dinos finished third with 241 points, followed by the Lady Spartans of Emery with 224. Logan finished 5th with 158.
The Lady Dinos claimed a pair of State Championships. In the 200 IM, Lily Thayn claimed a state championship, finishing first overall in her time of 2:24.91. Lisa King earned a second-place finish in the 50 freestyle, turning in a time of 25.72, and Kanyon Christensen finished second overall in the breaststroke in a time of 1:17.01. In the 500 freestyle, Maya Bower took second behind Canyon View’s Sydney Lovell, finishing in 5:48.78, and in the 200 freestyle, she finished fourth in 2:10.73. King finished third in the 100 freestyle in 57.31. Thayn would come up big again in the 100 butterfly, taking fourth in 1:09.15.
The 200 freestyle relay team of Bower, Thayn, King, and Christensen claimed the State Championship, turning in a time of 1:48.04, a full second faster than Canyon View’s time of 1:49.70. The Lady Dinos finshed fourth in the 400 relay and seventh in the 200 medley.
Canyon View also claimed the top spot on the boys’ side of the pool with 353 points; Union would take second with 317. The Emery Spartans finished third with 272 points, the Dinos were right behind with 201.5, and Ogden rounded out the top five with 199 points.
Bracken Hanson had a huge day for the Dinos, taking second place in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:53.11. He would go on to finish third in the 500 freestyle in a time of 5:07.01. Carbon’s James Tullis finished in fourth place in the backstroke with a time of 56.96; he would also take eighth in the 50 free.Cole Arthur finished sixth in the 50 free and would also place seventh in the breaststroke. Logan Kranandonk would take seventh in the 500 free and ei ghth in the 200 free.
In relays, Carbon would take fourth in the 200 freestyle, sixth in the 200 medley, and seventh in the 400 freestyle.
At the end of the Championships, Carbon coach Allie Chamberlain was awarded the 3A Coach Of The Year.
