On Friday afternoon, the Spartan boys jumped back into state playoff action in the consolation round to face the Canyon View Falcons. After falling in the quarterfinals on Thursday, the Spartans squared off against the Falcons, looking to move on and play Saturday. Emery came out hot in the first quarter but cooled off as Canyon View earned the 67-51 win.
Emery ended the season 15-11 with a 5-3 region mark. They defeated Logan at home last Friday to advance to the quarterfinal round against the Grantsville Cowboys, and even though it went into overtime, the Spartans dropped the contest and their dreams of a State Championship in a 79-75 loss, sliding into the consolation round to face Canyon View.
In the opening quarter, the Spartans came out firing and with 2:09 left in the first, Emery capped off a 9-0 run to take a 12-6 lead. They would maintain the lead throughout the quarter, even though Canyon View would cut into the Spartan lead. Emery closed things out, holding a 15-14 lead. All the fire the Spartans had in the first was gone in the second as they struggled offensively, and the Falcons took the lead, closing out the half with a 34-22 lead.
In the second half, the Spartans would fight to get back into the game, but Canyon View kept Emery at arm’s length and built a 16-point lead after the third quarter, 50-34, as both teams headed to the final eight minutes.
In the fourth, Emery matched the Falcons bucket-for-bucket, cutting into the Canyon View lead, but was never able to completely close the gap as the Falcons kept a steady pace and closed out the Spartans 67-51.
Porter Sitterud, the lone senior for the Spartans, led the team with 14, gathering four steals and dishing out three assists. Brek Griffin scored 12 while pulling down six rebounds and added two blocks and a pair of assists to his stat line. Logan Lester also scored 12 with a pair of steals and assists in the loss.
