The Spartans were back on the field Friday in Kanab to take on the Morgan Trojans. After being handed a loss in the opening game of the season, Emery was looking to put one in the win column, but it wasn’t meant to be as the Spartans fell 13-10.
Emery dropped their opening game with Providence Hall on Thursday evening and were looking for a rebound in the game with Morgan.
The Trojans were up first and took advantage, adding three runs to the scoreboard. Emery would go scoreless in the bottom of the inning as Morgan maintained their 3-0 lead.
The next three innings were an exercise in futility for both teams, as neither could get anything going offensively and both remained scoreless. But in the fifth, that would change.
Morgan would get things going in a big way, pushing the score to 8-0. With one out, the Trojans came up to the plate and sent a grand slam homerun over the center field wall to push the score to 12-0. They would add one more to carry a 13-0 lead to the bottom of the inning.
Emery would start off the bottom half of the frame with a single from Drake Stilson to get on base. After the next at-bat ended in an out, Beau Stilson would draw a walk, and then a Peyton Nielson single would load the bases for Trygg Jensen, who was hit by a pitch and brought in Drake Stilson. Tyce Larsen came up to bat with the bases still loaded and sent a line drive to left, bringing in Beau Stilson. Mason Thornley came up to the plate and, after a pitching change for Morgan, singled a line drive to right field that would bring Brogan Ward , who had entered as a courtesy runner for Larsen, and Jensen home to get the Spartans to 13-5. After a single by Jess Larsen, Easton Stoker came in, sending a single driving in Thornley. Drake Stilson came up to bat once again, sending a double to center, bringing home Jess Larsen and Stoker as Emery cut into the Trojan lead to 13-8. Trey Nielson collected a double to left, driving in Drake Stilson. Then, with two outs, Peyton Nielson sent a single to center, driving in Trey Nielson to cut the lead once again to 13-10, and that was as close as the Spartans would get, falling 13-10 to Morgan.
Drake Stilson went 2-2, scoring a pair of runs and driving in two. Tyce Larsen went 2-3 with two RBIs, and Peyton Nielson went 2-4 with an RBi and scored one run. Stoker, Jensen, and Trey Nielson all went 1-3 with a run scored and one RBI. Beau Stilson was 1-3 with a run scored, and Jess Larsen was 1-1 and scored one run.
Jensen went four innings on the mound, giving up three runs on one hit, and struck out three. Trey Nielson went 1/3 of an inning with eight runs on seven earned on four hits, striking out one, and Bodee Norton closed it out, surrendering two runs with one earned on one hit, and struck out one.
Emery turned around right after this contest ended and is facing Gunnison Valley at the time of publishing.
