
Over the weekend, the Dinos baseball team traveled to St. George for the annual tournament. Playing three games in two days, the Dinos had trouble on the base paths as they went 0-3 to bring their overall record to 4-5.
The Dinos had success early in the season, entering the St. George Tourney with a 4-2 mark, collecting a win over Uintah in their last contest.
Carbon opened play, taking on the Centennial Patriots out of Boise, Idaho. The Patriots kept the Dinos off the board as they collected an 8-0 win.
The Dinos had only three hits in the contest as Jordan Nichols had a double and Cash Withers and Jacen Urbanik each had a single.
Maddux Wilson was on the mound at the start, going 2.2 innings and giving up eight runs, seven earned, on five hits, and striking out two. Logan Curtis went 3.1, allowing one hit and striking out three.
Up next for the Dinos was the Pine View Panthers. Carbon was able to collect some offense in this one, but a five-run 4th inning put things out of reach for the Dinos as the Panthers took the win 10-4.
A lead-off single from Logan Bennett and a walk from Jordan Nichols loaded up the bases for Cash Withers, who came up to the plate and hit into a fielder’s choice. Bennett would score off of an error by the first baseman, and Withers would advance to second. The next Dino up to the plate was Paxton Falk, who sent a single to center, driving Withers home to give the Dinos a 2-0 lead as they headed into the bottom of the first, where they would get three quick outs and head into the top of the second were the Panthers returned the favor, getting out the first three Carbon batters they faced. Pine View tied things up in the bottom frame of the second.
Both teams went scoreless in the third, and at the top of the fourth, an Urbanik single to right drove in Kaden Sandoval to give Carbon a one-run edge, 3-2, but in the bottom of the innning the Panthers would take control recapturing the lead 7-3, Carbon was able to tack on one more run in the top of the seventh inning to get the score to 10-4 but the rally ended there as Pine View took the win.
Bennett went 2-4 to lead the Dinos in this one, scoring one run. Nichols was 1-3 with a run, and Sandoval was 1-2 with a run scored in the loss.
Falk got the start on the mound and surrendered eight runs, seven earned, on nine hits, while striking out four. Kanyon Grant came into the contest and gave up two runs on two hits.
The lone game for the Dinos on Saturday was against the Silverado Skyhawks out of Las Vegas. This contest was a defensive battle with the Skyhawks coming out on top 1-0.
Carbon only registered three hits in the contest, with Nichols collecting a pair of singles and Adrian Vasquez a single.
Nichols also got the start on the mound, putting in six innings, giving up one earned run on six hits, and striking out four. Grant closed it out, striking out one.
Carbon will be back on the field on Tuesday, when they will face East High School in the home opener.
Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.
