The Utah State Eastern softball team opened its 2026 Scenic West Athletic Conference schedule with a trip to Taylorsville, Utah, to take on No. 21 Salt Lake Community College. Because of an odd number of teams in the SWAC, the Eagles came into the weekend off a bye week.
To start the weekend, the Eagles kept the game close, but after an Ainzleigh Quinn home run kept the Eagles within a run, SLCC scored eight straight runs to defeat Eastern, 10-1. Quinn’s home run was the lone hit in the contest for Eastern.
The second game of the series showed more offense for the Eagles. Allie Fowler hit a two-run home run, and Jayda Spight added a two-run double. The Eagles, however, could not keep up with SLCC, losing 12-4.
A second day of games meant new opportunities for the Eagles. Brooklyn Zajac homered in the fourth inning to get Eastern on the board, but it was not enough as the Eagles fell 9-1. Zajac had two hits, while Ajla Hadzialijagic added another.
The last game of the weekend was the strongest for the Eagles. Eastern had a 7-5 lead after the top of the fourth inning. Salt Lake, however, scored ten straight runs to take the series finale, 15-7. Brooklyn Zajac hit her second home run of the series. Ainzleigh Quinn hit two doubles in the game and totaled three RBIs.
The Eagles now sit at 7-9 on the season. They will return home on March 20 to take on the North Idaho Cardinals. Games are scheduled for March 20-21, with doubleheaders each day.
