Coming off a win in their last outing, the Emery Spartans were eager to get back on the baseball diamond Tuesday as the Union Cougars came to town for their home opener. In a brilliant pitching display from Union, Emery could only muster three hits as they were shut out 13-0 in five innings.

Last week, Emery faced the Juab Wasps and collected a 9-8 victory. The contest with the Cougars also marked their first region contest of the season.

Union’s Tyson Marx had control of the game on the mound throughout, giving up just three hits and striking out five. He also had confidence in his defense behind him to get through the entire game, giving the Cougars the win.

In the bottom of the first inning, Peyton Nielson would send a single to the second baseman, but would get caught stealing in the next at-bat. Emery made their way through the contest and wouldn’t register another hit until the bottom of the fifth inning when Garrett Conover came up to the plate with Union up 13- 0 and made it to first on a ground ball to short. After registering an out in Emery’s next at bat, Mason Thornley came to the plate and sent a single, moving Conover to second. The next two batters up for Emery would fly out and pop out, ending the contest with Union earning a 13-0 win in five innings.

Nielson, Conover, and Thornley would all go 1-2 at the plate for the Spartans in the loss.

Beau Stilson got the start on the mound, going three innings, giving up six runs, five earned, on eight hits, and striking out five. Ben Johansen went the rest of the way, surrendering seven runs, six earned, on eight hits, and striking out two.

The Spartans will close out the week with a pair of road games, starting on Wednesday at Salem Hills. They will wrap up the week in Roosevelt to take on the Union Cougars once again.
