
The Carbon Lady Dino and Emery Lady Spartan softball squads met on the field in Price for the 1st of two meetings this season. Both Carbon and Emery were ready for this one as the Spartans put the finishing touches on the contest in the top of the 6th to take the 19-14 victory.
The Lady Dinos sit at 4-6 overall, holding a 0-3 mark in region play, and have a busy week ahead with four games on the slate between now and Saturday.
The Lady Spartans sit at 1-6 overall and 1-0 in region play with the win over Carbon. Emery will also be busy this weekend with three games upcoming.
An error and two walks would load the bases in the top of the first for Brielle Tuttle, who came up and grounded into a Fielder’s Choice, bringing Elly Stilson home to give Emery the early lead. Elli Stoker would single to the second baseman, and Hadley Larsen would score to put the Spartans up 2-0.
With two on and one out in the bottom of the first, Carbon’s Sienna Alderson would send a sacrifice fly to right field, bringing in Aleece Ardohain as the Dinos were able to cut the Spartan lead in half heading to the second inning.
The second inning was big for both teams as Emery came up to the plate; the first batter up, Zadriee Norton, would collect a walk. Stillson came up to the plate next and sent a home run over the center field wall, bringing in Norton to give the Spartans a 4-1 advantage, but the Lady Spartans weren’t finished. With one out, Aleeyah Cowley would draw a walk to get on base, then, with a pair of outs, Bailey Luke would fire off a double to center to bring Cowley home. Stoker came to the plate next and sent another double to center to bring Luke in to score. Kaybree Jensen came to the plate, and Stoker was not only able to get to third on a steal but would score on a wild pitch from Kadence Vea, giving Emery a 7-1 lead heading to the bottom half of the inning.
Carbon would come up to bat and, with a pair of outs on the board, would start a rally when Alexa Jones drove one to center to bring Bella Nelson in. Then it was just an assembly line of hits and runs as Ardohain drove in Lacie Gregersen for the score. Brailee Peterson stepped into the batter’s box and sent a pop-up to the second baseman, giving both Ardohain and Jones the opportunity to score. The inning would end with an Alderson pop-up to center that brought Peterson home to cut into the Spartan lead 7-6.
Things got quiet for both teams until the fourth, when Luke would score on a wild pitch in Jensen’s at-bat. With two outs, Norton would score on a wild pitch during Morgan Tuttle’s at-bat to put Emery back up by four, 10-6. In the bottom half of the inning, the Lady Dinos would go back to work as Alderson came up with one out and one on, sending a grounder to third that allowed Ardohain to score. Harli Heugly would double to bring Jones home. The frame came to an end as Nelson would single to left, giving Shayla Penovich the chance to score to get Carbon back within one at 10-9.
Cowley came up to the plate to start the fifth inning for the Lady Spartans and took the third pitch she saw over the wall in left for a lead-off home run. An error, a walk, and Stoker being hit by a pitch would load the bases for Emery. Norton came to the plate with one out and sent a ground ball to center that gave Luke and Brielle Tuttle the time they needed to score. Morgan Tuttle would ground out to first as Kembree Miller would cross home plate. The inning would end for Emery as Larsen came up to bat, and Norton would score on a wild pitch, as the Lady Spartans expanded their lead to 15-9.
Carbon came up in the bottom half of the fifth and started the inning with a pair of walks and a single from Ardohain. Peterson would come up and get hit by a pitch, bringing Jones home. Alderson was up next and sent a grounder to the shortstop, resulting in Ardohain being called out at third and Jones making it in for the score. With a pair of outs, Heugly stepped in and would send a single to left, bringing Peterson home. Kennlee Kennedy would single on a line drive to left, bringing Heugly and Kamdyn Hardy in to get the score to 15-14.
The Lady Spartans went back to work in the sixth as Hadley Grimm came up to bat with one out and two on and drove one to left that brought Luke and Miller home. Norton singled to center to score Grimm. With two out, Larsen sent a double to left field, driving in Norton to put the score at 19-14.
Carbon would get a chance in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings to take the lead back and come away with the win. Emery was able to close them out and take the victory.
For the Dinos, Ardohain went 2-3, scoring three and collecting an RBI. Peterson was 2-4 with three RBIs and a pair of runs. Alderson went 2-5, adding four RBIs. Heugly went 2-3 with two RBIs and a run scored, and Nelson was 2-4 with a run scored and an RBI in the loss.
On the mound for the Dinos, Vea got the start, going 1.2, giving up seven runs, five earned, on four hits, and struck out one. Bayleigh Sinclair entered the game, putting in three innings of work with eight runs, three earned, on six hits, striking out one. Preslee Lupo finished things out with four earned runs on four hits and one strikeout.
For the Lady Spartans, Stilson was 3-6 with a pair of RBIs, a pair of runs, and a home run. Larsen was 2-4 with a run and an RBI. Brielle Tuttle was 2-6 with a run and an RBI. Stoker went to 2-4 with two RBIs and one run. Norton was 2-2 with three runs and three RBIs, and Cowley was 1-4 with two runs and an RBI, including a home run.
Allison Jeffs got the start on the mound for the Lady Spartans, going six innings with eight earned runs on 12 hits, striking out one. Stoker closed the game out, giving up six runs, four earned, on three hits.
Carbon will be back on the diamond Wednesday, when they travel to take on Gunnison Valley, then spend the weekend in Richfield for the Richfield tournament.
The Lady Spartans will not be back on the diamond until Friday when they travel to take on the Manti Templars, and then they will also go to Richfield for tournament play this weekend.
