During the 2025-26 academic year, the Utah State Eastern Athletics department made a significant impact throughout the Carbon and Emery County communities by participating in 110 community engagement events. Student-athletes, coaches, and staff members dedicated countless hours to service projects, youth outreach, school activities, and community partnerships, strengthening the college’s connection to the community.
Teams and departments across the athletic program participated in a wide variety of events, including youth sports clinics, elementary school reading programs, city clean-up projects, local parades, and much more. All the Eastern athletic programs contributed to the department’s outreach efforts.
“I believe that the impact we make off the floor matters as much as the one we make on it,” said Spirit Squad Director Brandi Taylor-Johansen. “Service gives our athletes an opportunity to lead, connect, and give back to something bigger than ourselves.”
In addition to community service, USU Eastern Athletics placed a strong emphasis on youth engagement and mentorship. Athletes visited local elementary schools to interact with students, participate in recess activities, mentor young athletes, and host camps and tournaments for youth programs in the area. Spirit Squad members and Emmett the Eagle also represented the university at numerous public events, helping create excitement and school pride throughout the region.
The 110 engagement events reflect USU Eastern Athletics’ commitment to serving the community. By building relationships, supporting local organizations, and creating positive experiences for youth and families, the department continues to emphasize leadership, service, and community involvement as core parts of the student-athlete experience.
“Community engagement is a major part of who we are at USU Eastern,” said Athletic Director Jess Brinkerhoff. “Our student-athletes, coaches, and staff understand that being part of this community means more than competing in games. It means showing up, serving, mentoring, and helping create positive experiences for the people who support us. My hope is that these acts of service help strengthen the connection between the college and the community, while also teaching our student-athletes the importance of leadership, gratitude, and giving back.”
