While the total number of wins and losses in Summer League are far less important than the overall progress and development a rosters shows, several Utah Jazz (0-4 in the Las Vegas Summer League) players have found a way to stand out so far. Former Louisville Cardinal Donovan Mitchell has been able to continue what has been a very impressive summer thus far in both the Utah Summer League and the two games he’s participated in during the Las Vegas Summer League.
Highlighted by his 37-point performance in an overtime loss at the hands of the Memphis Grizzlies, Mitchell continues to turn heads both as an able scorer and above-average defender at the lead guard position. At just 6’3”, Mitchell actually has a 7’ wingspan that absolutely comes in handy as he has also been one of the more tenacious perimeter defenders in Las Vegas.
International basketball reporter David Pick recently mentioned the potential of former G-League forward Eric Griffin (11 rebounds vs Memphis) opting out of his Italian league deal based on reported interest from the Jazz and other teams; while G-league guard Travis Leslie (9 rebounds vs Memphis) has also turned some heads this summer.
2nd round pick Nigel Williams-Goss (55th overall in June’s draft) saw his summer get off to a bit of a slower start, but did manage to dish out a team-high eight assists in the game vs the Los Angeles Clippers when Mitchell didn’t play.
The former Gonzaga Bulldog will likely be in competition with Mitchell (if both make the roster) for reserve minutes behind newly added Ricky Rubio at the point guard position if Coach Snyder elects to utilize Dante Exum at the shooting guard. If Exum is still slotted as a backup point guard, then it could result in some tough decisions when it comes to the two rookies also vying for a roster spot.
