USU Eastern Press Release:
PRICE, UTAH – The Utah State Eastern women’s soccer team defeated Grand Canyon Club 4-0 on Thursday in Las Vegas.
Sophomore Kori Jorgensen got Eastern on the board in the first half with a goal with an assist from freshman Amanda Manwill.
USU Eastern led 1-0 at halftime and controlled most of the first half possession.
In the second half Eastern got off to a quick start by scoring in the first few minutes of the period.
Rachel Neff, Cami Gleason and Jorgensen all scored in the second half to put Grand Canyon Club away and pick up the win.
Freshmen Morgan Hall, Kalli Prendergast and sophomore Taryn Pritchett all earned an assist in the second half as well.
Head coach Ammon Bennett said after the game that he was happy with the offense and the way his team controlled the game.
“I thought we controlled well, we missed several really good opportunities including three balls off the crossbar and the game could have been quite a bit more than just four goals,” said Bennett.
Although goalkeeper Shyann Jones and the Eastern defense held Grand Canyon to a shutout, Bennett said the defense still needs some improvement.
“We still need to work on some defensive shape, some defensive ideas, and some fundamental things such as not stabbing at the ball and not try to win balls we shouldn’t but overall good performance in a 4-0 win,” he said.
The victory gives USU Eastern their second straight win and a 2-1 overall record. The win also gives the team more confidence as they continue to prepare for their conference schedule according to Pritchett.
“Winning the non-conference games helps gives us confidence and helps us realize that we have more potential than the level we’re playing at,” said Pritchett.
Their non-conference schedule continues this Saturday in Las Vegas with a match against Sheridan College at 1 p.m. PST.
