Every week the Carbon School District highlights schools within the district by sending a representative from that featured school to share a brief update on the latest happenings. This week Helper Middle School’s Principal, Mika Salas talked about the school’s test score from last year.

“Helper Middle School has done incredible well, the first year that I came to the school was the first year that we tested with the SAGE. It was a little rocky that first year, we got a D grade from the state, we weren’t very high on the charts, we were actually dead last in math in both proficiently and growth,” said Salas. The state conducts its grading by assembling 20 schools together that have similar demographics. The school

“Language Arts we’re actually second behind North Summit in proficiency and we’re actually first in growth. In Math, we were about sixth in proficiently, but coming from the bottom that was very impressive, but we’re actually second with growth,” stated Salas. As far as the subject of Science, the school is third in proficiency against their cohorts and second with growth. The administration will take these scores and work with the faculty to set goals for this year.

Since 2013, the school has improved tremendously in just a short amount of time. “Everybody in our school family works toward the success of the students and I think you can fill it when you walk in the door and I feel that our kids are better when they leave us than when they get there and that’s what we are shooting for,” said Salas. This year’s first report card will be sent out on Monday, September 25, so parents/guardians should be receiving those.
