Each week the Carbon School District features a school to share their current and upcoming events with the public. This week’s highlighted school is Creekview Elementary, who is known for their amazing STEM program.
“Last year at the end of the school year we were awarded the Gold STEM Designation. We are really excited about the recognition from the State Office of Education and the STEM Action Center,” said Chantelle Gazell, PTA member. “We really just focus on the STEM part of the education curriculum and its really grown over the past couple of years and an education that they are getting with these STEM activities and the STEM based classes will really help propel them into the jobs of the future.” STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics any activities/projects are must be geared around one of those topics.
The STEM Bus recently made a stop at the school allowing students to partake in STEM activities. “Some of the students will be able to go into that bus and experience hands-on like the 3D modeling and video game designing, as well as, other engineering activities,” stated Gazell. One of the STEM projects that students participate in is building a contraption made out of canned foods that they gather for their annual food drive. Once they have pulled off their design all the canned food is donated to the local food bank to assist needy families in the community.
There are a few dates that parents/guardians need to remember, district wide ESL (English Second Language) family night. This is an opportunity for parents/guardians to be a part of their student’s education. Detail for these evening gathering will be posted on the school’s website.
The first Parent Teacher Conferences is scheduled for Tuesday, October 10 and Wednesday, October 11. This is to find out how your student is doing in their classes and set some goals with their teachers.
Finally, the school wants to remind all families to complete a Free and Reduced Lunch application. The reasoning behind this is to help the school in receiving Title 1 funding which helps in hiring different aides within the school.
