Carbon School District weekly update takes time to feature schools within the district. This week Sally Mauro Elementary located in Helper is the highlight and Principal Jarad Hardy, who is in his second year at the school, shared what’s new with his students and teachers.

The school conducts a merit award system for students which is used to encourage them to strive for their best academically and socially. “We really like out Bulls Horn Program, where the kids get tickets for exhibiting that positive behavior and get prizes later on,” stated Hardy. “This year we have added something to it, where the kids get to give those bull horns to the teachers. If the teachers do something special for them and so, the kids get to give them a Staff Shout Out.” By practicing, then showing the act of appreciation, gives students a positive attitude in other areas of their young lives.

There are some important dates this month that school will not be in session, Fall Break October 19 and October 20, plus October 30 which is Professional Development Day for teachers. Students that are needing to get retakes of their school pictures may do so on Friday, October 27.

All fifth-grade students are preparing for their annual event that takes place every year in November. “The fifth-grade participates in the Constitution Bee. It’s sponsored by the Lion’s Club, they give the kids a copy of the Constitution and they study it. Then in November they will have a competition,” said Hardy. A few members from the local Lion’s Club International will come in as a panel of judges to ask students different questions pertaining to all aspects of the Constitution. The winners will be selected by the number of questions answered correctly and recognized through cash prizes.
