The jury reached a guilty verdict in the double murder trial of Seth Gordon Peterson on Thursday in the Carbon County District Courthouse.
The 26-year-old is accused of shooting and killing his mother, Susan Peterson and brother, James Peterson near the town of Hiawatha in November 2016. Peterson was apprehended the same day and booked into the Carbon County Jail. The charges filed against him were two counts of aggravated murder, as well as counts of attempted murder, aggravated robber and failure to stop at the command of a police officer.
The trial for the murders began Monday morning where jurors listened to testimony over the course of four days. The group of jurors began deliberation on Thursday and were able to agree upon a verdict the same day.
Jurors found Peterson guilty for killing his 23-year old brother, then reduced the charge to manslaughter for the death of his 45-year-old mother. The three remaining charges also resulted in a guilty verdict.
It is most likely that Peterson will face life in prison without the possibility of parole. This comes from the announcement prosecutors made in January stating that they would not pursue the death penalty, if the suspect was convicted.
The sentencing hearing will be held on February 7 at 10:00 am.
