The 2018 calendar looks to be a fun and productive year for local seniors who attend the Carbon County Senior Center.

“We had a really good year last year, we’re always doing fundraisers. We brought in over $10,000.00 with our fundraisers and that was really good, that was the best I think we have ever done,” said Director, Debby Kobe. “We’ve got lots of things in the fire this year to help raise money and to have activities for the seniors. So, we’re really excited about the 2018 year.”

Daily activities at the center include line dancing, Zumba, yoga, movies, quilting and sewing, as well as, small healthcare clinics. Lunch is made available for all seniors; the menu is readily available on the center’s website.

One of the annual fundraising events is currently in the planning stages. “We do a card party where everybody can come. We have a spaghetti dinner with that and it’s been really successful, it’s one of our biggest fundraisers for the year and it’s just a lot of fun we have a lot of people that come in and play cards,” said Kobe. This event usually takes place later in the year but at the request of the seniors they wanted to hold it earlier. The date will be announced at a later time.

In April the annual Book and Puzzle Sale will take place where a lot of the books will be sold for as little as $.25. “We have lots and lots of books donated to the Senior Center; usually we make close to $200.00 on that sale.  Anybody can come in when we have the book sale, they are more than welcome to come in and we usually have it for a full week,” stated Kobe. Community members can plan on the annual 3K/5K run/walk taking place on April 28.

The month of May will feature a Bottle Billiard Tournament, June is the month that the annual picnic has been scheduled, it will take place at Little Bear Campground this year. September there will be another fundraising event, When Pies Fly, which was a huge hit with the public last year. Individuals could purchase pies, where they were given a chance to throw the pie at one of the community’s dignitaries; last year Joe Piccalo, Sheriff Jeff Wood and Frank Ori were a few of the lucky victims. In October, the second annual Bazaar will take place at the center where individuals in the community will be allowed to purchase a space to sell their arts and crafts. A Volunteer Recognition Dinner and a trip to Kentucky is also planned to take place for the seniors.

All of the monthly events can be found in their free newsletter that is readily available at the Senior Center. There is a gift shop located inside the center which is only open on certain days and times. The shop features many homemade items made by some of the seniors, such as embroidered dish towels, crocheted items of all kinds that are available to be sold to the public.
