The Emery Spartans boys swim team captured the school’s second consecutive State Championship, and third in four years, with a stellar performance at the Wasatch Aquatic Center Thursday afternoon in Heber.
Led by junior Keldan Guymon, the Spartans accumulated four first place finishes in the 11 events to score 242 points. North Summit ended in second with 187 points, followed by Judge Memorial at 171.5. Grantsville and Grand rounded out the field of five in a 20 team field.
Rowland Hall claimed the State Championship on the girl’s side of the pool, finishing with 279 points. Carbon finished right behind in second at 257, followed by Emery in third at 225. Judge Memorial and North Summit completed the top five as 21 teams competed in the season finale.
Guymon had a hand in all four of the Emery boy’s top finishes. Earning first place in the 50 yard free (22.67), and 100 yard free (50.99), he was also a part of two relay teams that topped the competition.
Deegan Minchey (24.48), Parker Stilson (23.88), Asher Beagley (23.64) and Guymon (22.32) teamed up to claim the state title in the 200 yard freestyle relay with a final time of 1:34.32. North Summit finished just behind with a time of 1:35.54.
The same four later earned another top finish, this time in the 400 yard freestyle relay. Ending with a time of 3:32.32, the Spartans topped second place Grand’s time of 3:36.92.
Sydney Terwilleger, Haley Guymon, Kaelee Hooley and Alexis Johansen earned the lone event win for the Lady Spartans in the 200 yard medley relay. Anchored by Johansen’s time of 27.10 seconds, Emery finished in 2:03.31. Grantsville finished in second with a time of 2:04.84.
Thursday’s season finale caps a brilliant swim season for both the Emery boys and girls that includes region titles for both.
