The Emery Spartans played host to 13 other schools for the annual Darrel Gardner Invitational Tuesday afternoon in Castle Dale.
Working as a state qualifier the Darrel Gardner Invitational has become a tradition for many schools throughout the state. This year’s competition featured a mix of 3A, 2A and 1A schools.
The Grand Red Devils accumulated 147 points to edge out Emery’s 133 point performance on the boy’s side of the track. Richfield finished in third with 111 points, while Carbon and Monticello completed the top five.
Richfield squeaked by the Carbon Lady Dinos 125 to 123.5 to grab the top spot in the girls overall competition. Grand finished comfortably in third with 107 points. Emery ended fourth with 56 points, followed San Juan with 41.
Emery will now take a lengthy 11 day break in the season before traveling to Copper Hills on Saturday, March 31. Carbon will continue the season this Saturday in San Juan at the Blue Mountain Invitational.
