Despite holding a three run lead entering the fifth inning the Carbon Dinos were unable to weather a late Juab run, falling 8-4 Tuesday afternoon in Helper.
Needing a victory to clinch the school’s first region championship since 2010, Carbon suffered from three fielding errors and an interference call at the plate. Juab managed to capitalize on each of the Carbon mistakes in the come-from-behind-effort.
“You can make mistakes against certain teams, but Juab is competing for a region championship,” said manager Jeff Cisneros. “Good teams will make you pay this time of the season. Right now errors are hurting us and we need to clean that up moving forward.”
Cody Lowe continued to impress at the plate finishing 3-4 with a triple and two RBIs to lead the Dinos. Braxton Bennett logged the team’s other RBI in a 2-2 performance. As a team the Dinos notched nine hits compared to Juab’s eight.
Zac Bradley pitched 4.1 frames of action from the starting role, allowing five hits and one earned run. Triton Abeyta was tagged with the loss in 1.1 innings of relief work, giving up zero earned runs while on the mound. Bennett also saw time on the hill recording four outs.
“We started out well and jumped out early on them,” said Cisneros. “We made some errors that really hurt us. We walked a couple of guys and it kind of combined with the other mistakes.”
Tuesday’s loss marks the first in nine region games for the Dinos this season. Now sitting 8-1, the team will have another opportunity to clinch the region title on Friday on the road in the second meeting with Juab.
