The Helper Merchants will enter the Utah State American Legion Baseball Tournament as one of the two No. 1 seeds, after claiming the Regional Championship Saturday in Pleasant Grove.
Entering the regional tournament as the No. 2 seed from the Southern Division, Helper easily defeated Taylorsville 12-2 in five innings Thursday evening. The win set the stage for a meeting with St. George, the No. 1 seed from the Southern Division in the semifinals.
In a game that went back and forth, Helper scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to rally past St. George 6-5. The win marked the second victory of the season over the division’s top squad.
Later in the evening Helper finished off the regional tournament with another one-run win, this time topping Salem Hills 5-4.
Helper will now meet Syracuse in the opening round of the State Championship Tournament Friday evening. The double-elimination season ending tournament will run through the next two weekends in Kearns.
