The Emery High School golf team wrapped up the regular season with a fifth place finish at the Carbon Country Club Monday afternoon, clinching a spot in the 3A State Championship Tournament in the process.
As a team the Spartans fired a 345, finishing 10-strokes better than sixth place San Juan. Richfield and Grand tied at the top of the leaderboard with a 330, while North Sanpete and Manti finished third and fourth. South Sevier ended in last with a 360.
Needing a top five finish overall to qualify as a team for the state tournament, the Spartans finished 51-strokes ahead of San Juan. Richfield claimed the division crown by topping second place Grand by 23-strokes. Manti placed third and North Sanpete logged fourth place comfortably.
Emery standout Oakley Toomer finished second overall in the region, tying with San Juan’s Kylor Johnson with a season score of 707. The two second placers ended three strokes behind the Region 14 medalist Dillman River of North Sanpete.
With the regular season now complete the Spartans will turn their attention to the 3A State Championship Tournament on Oct. 1 and 2 at the Meadow Brook Golf Course in Taylorsville. The state tournament will feature 15 teams throughout the three regions in the 3A classification.
