The Emery Spartans improved to 2-0 on the season with a dominating 73-61 victory over the Union Cougars Tuesday night at the Spartan Center in Price.
Trailing 6-2 early in the first quarter the Spartans used a 13-0 run to capture the lead for good. A seven-point first quarter advantage increased to 16 by the end of the first half. The second half was a formality as Emery cruised through the final two periods.
Senior Kyson Stilson delivered another solid performance, finishing with 22 points and four rebounds. Brax Jensen also recorded 17 points, including three makes from beyond the arc.
The Spartans received a heavy boost from the bench as Mason Faimalo scored 17 points in a reserve roll. Faimalo was called upon early in the first quarter as foul trouble mounted for the Emery. Jordan Ekker also pushed the bench scoring with seven.
Despite early foul trouble Union’s Reid Price finished with a team-best 21 points as the Cougars dipped to 1-1 on the season. Chase Birchell connected on three shots from deep as he finished 11. Center Logan Gillman ended with nine.
Tuesday’s win marked the second of three straight home games to open the season for the Spartans. Looking to move to 3-0, Emery will return to the court on Friday to play host to Maple Mountain.
