Henry Scorzato passed away on Thursday, November 29, 2018 surrounded by his family at the Pinnacle Nursing Home in Price, UT. He was born on December 23, 1928 at his family’s mine, the Arronco Coal Mine near Kenilworth, Utah.
Henry attended school in Salt Lake City, Utah and enrolled in the U.S. Navy following graduation. He served on the U.S.S. Pascagoula PCE-874 during World War II and was honorably discharged on November 3, 1947 at the rank of Fireman First Class.
Following his discharge, Henry returned to Kenilworth where his two friends, Luke and John Pappas, introduced him to his wife of 75 years, Marilyn Pappas. They built their home in Kenilworth where they raised their daughter, Tonya.
Henry had a long and distinguished career in the mining industry starting at the age of 8 and retiring at the age of 70. He began by working in the family mine alongside his grandfather taking care of the mine’s horses. He worked in nearly every Utah coal mine, several potash mines, and finished his career at Andalex’s Wildcat Loadout.
Henry’s personality was bigger than his stature; he was a proud and demonstrative Italian with a colorful vocabulary. He was always ready for a party and good time. He belonged to Price Elks BPOE #1550, Naomi Chapter #13 Order of the Eastern Stars, Joppa Lodge #26 Price, Utah Masons, American Legion Post 3 Price, Utah, and the El Kalah Shriners.
Henry loved his family especially his grandkids and great grandkids. He always had a camera in hand to document the family gatherings and enjoyed reminiscing about “the good ole days.” He was an avid outdoorsman, but he hated the wind!
Henry is preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn, his parents, Louis Scorzato and Josephine Arronco Scorzato, brother, Victor Scorzato, brother-in-laws, Luke and John Pappas, and sister-in-law Lucille Phister. He is survived by his daughter Tonya (Art) Bruno, grandchildren Scott (Anita) Bruno and Cori (Adam) Callahan, great-grandchildren Gianna Bruno, Cole and Cade Callahan, brother Virgil, sisters-in-law Evelyn Pappas and Doris Pappas, special cousin, Lucy Hausknecht, and numerous nephews and nieces.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, December 4, 2018 at Ascension St. Matthews (522 Homestead Blvd, Price, UT).
