Offensive third quarter struggles haunted the Carbon Dinos in a 62-51 loss to the Providence Hall Patriots Friday night in Herriman.
Hoping to rebound from the Region 14 opening loss on Wednesday, the Dinos trailed by five at the end of the opening half Friday night. Providence Hall stretched the advantage to 14 by outscoring Carbon 16-7 in the third quarter.
Despite the loss Carbon senior Derek Hillam continued to stuff the sheet scoring a game-high 23 points and 12 rebounds. The double-double for Hillam is the second in as many games following a 20 point and 18 rebound effort against Juab.
Junior Brady Gagon scored all nine of his points from the three-point line, giving the bench a boost in a reserve role. Braxton Bennett finished with six points and both Collin Lewis and Kaleb Nelson chipped in with four.
Marcus Sherwood led Providence Hall with 18 points and seven rebounds as the Patriots improved to 6-2 with a win in their first region tilt this season. Dallin Dodge scored 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds, while Parker Green finished in double-figures with points.
Friday’s loss dips Carbon to 1-7 overall on the season and 0-2 in Region 14 play. With only one game remaining before Christmas break, the Dinos will return to the court with a home contest Wednesday against the Delta Rabbits.
