The Emery Lady Spartans held off a late North Sanpete rally to secure a 5-4 Region 15 win Wednesday afternoon in Castle Dale.
Scoring all five runs in the first two innings of the game, Emery carried a two-run lead into the bottom of the seventh. Despite giving up one run, the defense managed to shut down the Hawks for the first region win of the season.
Senior Bailey Huggard earned the win on the hill, giving up eight hits and three earned runs, while also striking out three in five innings. Kaylee Price worked the final two frames in relief, allowing one earned run.
Senior AdriAnne Childs continued to soar at the plate, going 2-4 with one home run and three RBIs. Taleigh Price ended 2-3 with a single and double to go along with two RBIs. Ambree Bennett also helped push the offensive effort with three singles.
Nearing the mid-season spot the Lady Spartans have now won five of their last six outings. Wednesday’s win places Emery third in Region 15 with a record of 1-1.
Up next the Lady Spartans will host the Grand Red Devils Thursday afternoon. Friday the group will travel to Mount Pleasant for a second meeting with North Sanpete.
