Carbon County Commissioner Tony Martines took time to speak with Castle Country Radio about the various political figures that have made some recent visits to the Castle Country area.
“We had Senator Mike Lee here this week. He had a round table up there in Helper and talked to some of the local people, some of the local leaders, kind of what his experiences in D.C. Bless his heart for doing that for us its not a thing we would like to do but he also was interested in how he can help these areas – this being Carbon County the rural areas. Not only him but his staff has been in touch with us and we have connections there so as things grow and develop, we can reach out if needed to Senator Lee’s office,” said Commissioner Martines.
Another visit took place on Tuesday, March 19 when Congressman John Curtis held a Town Hall Meeting in Price. “We also had Congressman Curtis here and his staff. The commission was able to sit down and discuss a few topics of concern that we have – most of those being on the financial side, budget side, economic development. Again, we have support from him and his office as well. But Congressman Curtis was Mayor of Provo, he has that background. He and his crew, his staff they’ve offered a few incentives and a few ideas as well, maybe some federal things that can happen. Somebody that has already been there, the guidance they can provide us is definitely beneficial,” stated Commissioner Martines. The meeting with Congressman John Curtis was very promising, informative and productive for County Commissioners. They look forward to future dealings with the congressman.
The Utah Coal Country Strike Team is one of five proposals that has advanced to the final round of the $1 million Alliance for the American Dream Competition and they were able to receive some funding from the legislature this year. “We’ve also got, as you mentioned from the legislature $500,000.00 coming in support of that. So if we can combine that with actually winning, which I believe will be in June they’re going to announce if we’re a contender, believe its another $1 million. So that’s a tremendous amount of money that could be coming into our area and our neighbors to the south as well, it’s going to be very beneficial,” said Commissioner Martines. Utah Coal Country Strike Team is one of three Utah projects that is moving on to the final round of competition this summer.
