The Western Mining & Railroad Museum are thrilled to invite the community out for the Spike 150 Celebration in conjunction with the 150th Anniversary of the Transcontinental Railroad. The event is set to take place on Helper’s Historic Main Street on Friday, May 10 from 11:00 am to 7:00pm.

“So Spike 150 is to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the Transcontinental Railroad and as we know, that was completed right here in Utah and so across the state, we’re holding celebrations,” said Western Mining & Railroad Museum Representative, Anna Bryner. “Down in Helper we’re going to be having an all-day event right there in the museum block we’re going to have music, games, food vendors but the most exciting part I think will be the exhibits and the new films that are going to be shown.”

There will be live broadcasts of Spike Event around the state shown all day at The Rio which is located at 210 South Main Street.

A few exhibits that can be seen during the event are the Utah Division of State History Traveling Exhibit, A World Transformed: The Transcontinental Railroad and Utah which is located inside the Western Mining & Railroad Museum. Bryner explains what guests will see at the exhibit, “There are photographs, lithographs, all kinds of historical documents commemorating this important event and specifically looking into Utah’s role in the completion of the railroad.” A great display of art can be found at the Anna Jespersen Fine Arts Gallery the exhibition is entitled Spike 150 – Helper and the Railroad. The gallery is located at 167 South Main Street.

That evening there will be a special movie premiere at The Rio Theatre at 6:00 pm entitled The Power of Rail: A Journey into the History of Helper. “We’re going to be debuting a new film that’s been produced and so its really fun, actually it features a lot of the Helper school children and others in the community kind of retelling the history of Helper and giving a local feel to that history,” stated Bryner. A special introduction will be given by State Senator David Hinkins and Carbon County School Superintendent Lance Hatch.
