Falling in an early hole the Emery Spartans were unable to regain their footing falling 13-2 to the North Sevier Wolves in a 2A East clash Friday afternoon in Castle Dale.

North Sevier scored three runs in the second inning and added nine more in the third as they blew past the Spartans to earn the season sweep. Accumulating just two hits throughout the contest, the Spartans scored their only runs in the third frame already facing a double-digit deficit.

Tel Gardner was charged with the loss on the hill, receiving minimal run support in the setback. Friday’s loss comes just one day after Emery blasted 3A Union by scoring a season high 15 runs at home.

Now sitting 1-6 in league play, the Spartans trail San Juan by two games for the final playoff spot awarded to the division. Still on the schedule is two games with Monticello, who is currently 0-8 in league play.

Emery and Monticello will meet not once, but twice this week. The first of two games will take place on Tuesday in Monticello, the second on Friday in Castle Dale. The Spartans will also go toe-to-toe with Grand on Thursday. Emery will seemingly need two wins to keep pace with San Juan for the final playoff spot.
